PRESS RELEASE

REMEMBERING THE GREAT ALEX

Following the death of Alex Higgins Keynsham Snooker Centre owner Derek Curnow reflects on three exhibition nights at his club featuring the ‘Hurricane’.

Alex played two nights for me during 2006 when the twice world champion was suffering badly with his health, despite being really poorly he performed miracles in front of a packed audience consistently knocking in 50 and 60 breaks.

On both nights Alex stunned the audience by making immaculate speeches when play was finished.  In addition he spent a considerable amount of time making himself available to sign autographs and provide pictures for the locals.

Alex was a complex character but he did have a good side and not many people appreciated that fact, we handled him in a professional manner and he didn’t cause us too many problems during the 2006 visit.

Three years later in 2009 he again appeared at my club and by this time his health had deteriorated to a very serious level, he was very weak but still managed to knock in a 70 plus break to the delight of the crowd.

The will power of Alex was amazing but sadly he died a sick and broken man.  Press reports indicate not too many of the top players in the world attended his funeral, these same players would not be making a living playing snooker today without the great mans’ contribution.

No more turmoil, no more pain, no more suffering, rest in peace Alex ‘Hurricane’ Higgins.

Snooker Etiquette 2010 – the unwritten rules of snooker

1.Shake hands before and after a match regardless of the results.

2.If you have knowingly committed a foul shot, you should own up to it.

3.You should endeavour not to stand in the line of the opponents shot.

4.You should make as little noise as is possible and not talk while it is your opponents turn.

5.You should make an effort to re-spot the coloured balls for an opponent in a timely fashion.

6.If a Player is in a situation where the number of snookers required is an unrealistic target, the player should concede the frame.

7.If you have to walk past other tables wait until a Player has played his/her shot if at all possible.

8.A Player should call out the points out during the break as they are made.

9.If a genuine fluke has been made it is common courtesy to apologise to the opponent.

10.At the end of a frame/match a Player should not offer excuses for poor play/bad luck etc., to an opponent who has played better than them.
